Please introduce yourself by sharing your expertise and experiences that will support the work of the CCSMS board.

I am a recently retired Health Care Administrator having served 35 years in this profession, 24 of which were as a senior-level administrator at MUSC.  I have extensive experience in financial management and budgeting as well as personnel management, having been responsible for an operations budget in excess of $50 million with over 650 personnel.  I have a bachelor’s degree (BS) in Health Education and a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration (MHA).  Currently, I am the President of the Rotary Club of Charleston-Breakfast where I have been active in promoting literacy projects at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School for the past 16 years.  I have led the effort of establishing a Rotary Interact Club at the Charleston Charter School for Math and Science that will be co-sponsored financially by our club and the Historic Charleston-Lunch Rotary Club.  The community services-oriented Interact Club is scheduled to be inaugurated this next school year.

Statement:
Please share how you will advance the mission of CCSMS by serving on the board.

As the son of an Elementary School principal, I learned early on in my life the importance and value of getting a good education.  My parents instilled in me the belief that we all have a responsibility to improve the quality of life in our respective communities and that can be accomplished by ensuring that all children, young adults and even older citizens have an equal opportunity to attend a good school and further their education.  The key to having a good school is to: 1) have dedicated teachers who work collaboratively with each other and with the students’ parents/guardians; 2) have a strong supportive school administration; 3) have a school board that is oriented to educational strategic planning that draws on the needs of the students, the expertise of the teachers, school administration, leaders and advisory groups in the community including governmental officials and 4) ensure that all groups noted above be sensitive and accountable to each other, working toward the mission of the school.  I believe I bring to the CCSMS school interpersonal skills, business management expertise and, very importantly, energy and dedication and that would help build on the successes that all those associated with the CCSMS have already achieved.
